                          MEEM 101 - Applied Mathematics & Computational Methods  



Unit 1  
Fourier & Laplace Transform, Elementary Properties and application in B.V.P., Finite Elements methods. Complex & Vector analysis, Matrices.  

Unit 2
Axiomatic Approach to Probability, Random or stochastic Variate, Mathematical Expectations. Elementary idea about probability distribution.  Sampling Distribution and confidence interval, time series, testing of hypothesis in analysis of invariance, Chi- Square Test.  

Unit 3  
Error Analysis, Principles of flow charts, Program Testing, Difference Operator, Testing of wrong and missing Data using different Techniques.  

Unit 4  
Linear Programming, Feasible Solutions, Solutions, Simplex and Revised Simplex Methods, Duality.  

Unit 5  
Difference equation, Solving Simultaneous equations using numerical methods, Solving B. V. Problems using difference techniques. Optimization techniques.



                           MEEM 102 – Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution  



Unit 1
Electrical Energy Generation, concepts, various types of generating stations and their locations. Study of Thermal, Hydel, Nuclear and Non Conventional energy generation schemes. Block diagram of various power stations- schemes and sub systems.  
Steam Power Plants: Types of power plants, steam power plant: Design Operation & Thermodynamic Analysis, steam turbine power output, Power Plant Performance Monitoring & Testing, Heat Rate, Efficiency, Optimization of Performance  

Unit 2
Steam Generators: Boiler and steam Generator construction types, Energy Balance and efficiency of steam Generator, Furnace & burners, steam Generators with fluidized based Combustion (FBC): fluidized bed types; emissions reduction in Fluidized bed furnaces, Steam turbines, Condensers, feed Water Heaters and Cooling Water systems  

Unit 3
Gas Turbine Power Plants: Air standard joule Cycle, Actual efficiency of the Gas Turbine Power Plant, Enhancing the Gas Turbine Plant Performance: increasing the compression Pressure Ratio and Turbine inlet Temperature;  

Unit 4
Hydro Power Generation, Hydro Turbine, Large medium and small hydro power station, Micro Hydel Nuclear power generation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.  
Generation :synchronous generator, operation, power angle characteristics, and the infinite bus concept, dynamic analysis and modeling of synchronous machines, excitation systems, prime mover governing systems, automatic generation control, auxiliaries.  

Unit 5
AC transmission: over head cables, transmission line equations, regulation & transmission losses, performance estimation, reactive power compensation, flexible AC transmission, skin, proximity and Ferranti effects, corona phenomena, critical voltages and power loss. HVDC transmission.  
Distribution system: distribution system, conductor’s size, Kelvin’s law performance calculations and analysis, distribution inside industrial & commercial buildings entrance terminology, substation & feeder circuit design considerations, distribution automation.  

 

                                  MEEM 103 - Energy Sources, Policy and Planning   


Unit 1
Review of world & Indian energy situation in respect of demand, supply & resources in the historic context. Review of power development in India. Primary & secondary energy resources, their inter convertibility.  
Energy (and Power) in the country, Tariffs and subsidies. Energy Utility interface. Private sector participation in Power Generation. State role and physical properties, Energy and Development; National Energy Plan; Role of modeling in energy policy analysis.  

Unit 2
Energy demand analysis; trend analysis, econometric models; elasticity approach; input –output models; simulation /process models.  
Energy supply analysis; cost of exploration and economics of utilization of depletable and renewable resources; scarcity rent; international energy supply.

Unit 3
Energy demand supply balancing; energy economy iteration; Energy investment planning; Energy environment interaction; Energy pricing  

Unit 4
Energy Action Planning: Key elements, force field analysis, Energy policy purpose, perspective, contents, formulation, ratification, Organizing – location of energy management, top management support, managerial function, roles and responsibilities of energy manager, accountability. Motivating-motivation of employees: Information system-designing barriers, strategies; Marketing and communicating-training and planning.  
Material and Energy balance: Facility as an energy system, methods for preparing process flow, material and energy balance diagrams.  

Unit 5
Energy Monitoring and Targeting: Defining monitoring & targeting, elements of monitoring & targeting, data and information-analysis, techniques –energy consumption, production, cumulative sum of differences (CUSUM).  
     


                                              MEEM 104 – Hydro Power Generation 
  


Unit 1 
Fundamental of Hydraulic  Engineering – Water resource and its potential.
Hydrology- Hydrological cycles, hydrograph, steam flow  characteristics, flow duration curve, mass curve storage, pond age , site selection.

Unit 2
Classification of Hydropower plants- According to water flow, regulation, load, head pumped, storage plant, storage requirement  determination.

Unit 3
Small Hydropower Plants-  Site configurations,  planning  a small  hydropower  scheme, speed increasers, generators and  turbine  control.

Unit 4
Hydraulic turbine classification – Classification criteria,  turbine selection criteria, efficiency, performance characteristics,  Biological aspects, economics analysis.

Unit 5
Environmental Impacts and its mitigation-  Burdens and impacts identification, impacts in the construction phase.

       
 
                             MEEM 105 – Environment Policy, Standards & Regulations   



Unit 1
Global environmental concerns: The Scenario, The Changing Global atmosphere & common concerns. United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), Kyoto Protocol, Conference of Parties (COP), Various Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Prototype Carbon fund (PCF), Earth Summit, Sustainable development.

Unit 2
The Global Program for protected area management, Strategies for environmental improvement plan. Organizations working in the field of energy and environment - UNEP, IPCCC, CPCB etc. Basic features of ISO 14000.

Unit 3
Water Quality: Parameters: Physical, Chemical and Bacteriological .Potable Water Standards, Waste Waster Effluent Standards. Minimal National Standards (MINAS).  

Unit 4
Environment Policies: Water Act 1974, The Air Act, 1981, Environmental (Protection) Act.-1986, M. P. State Environment Policy, Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998, Biomedical Waste (Management & Handling ) Rules 1998.
